ArtificialDiet#

The ArtificialDiet intervention class is used to include feeding stations for vectors within a node in a simulation. This is a node-targeted intervention and takes effect at the broad village level rather than at the individual level. For individual-level effects, use HumanHostSeekingTrap instead. An artificial diet diverts some of the vectors seeking to blood feed that day, resulting in a two-fold benefit:

  1. The uninfected mosquitoes avoid biting infected humans some of the time, therefore decreasing the amount of human-to-vector transmission.

  2. Infectious vectors are diverted to feed on the artificial diet instead of the humans, therefore decreasing the amount of vector-to-human transmission.

At a glance:

  • Distributed to: Nodes

  • Serialized: No, it needs to be redistributed when starting from a serialized file.

  • Uses insecticides: No

  • Time-based expiration: No

  • Purge existing: Yes. If a new intervention is added to to the node, the existing intervention of the same name is removed when the new one is added.

  • Vector killing contributes to: No killing

  • Vector effects: Artificial Diet Feed instead of Human or Animal Feed

  • Vector sexes affected: Females only

  • Vector life stage affected: Adult

Note

Parameters are case-sensitive. For Boolean parameters, set to 1 for true or 0 for false. Minimum, maximum, or default values of “NA” indicate that those values are not applicable for that parameter.

EMOD does not use true defaults; that is, if the dependency relationships indicate that a parameter is required, you must supply a value for it. However, many of the tools used to work with EMOD will use the default values provided below.

JSON format does not permit comments, but you can add “dummy” parameters to add contextual information to your files. Any keys that are not EMOD parameter names will be ignored by the model.

The table below describes all possible parameters with which this class can be configured. The JSON example that follows shows one potential configuration.

Description

Artificial_Diet_Target

enum

NA

NA

AD_WithinVillage

The targeted deployment of artificial diet. This parameter is required. Possible values are:

  • AD_WithinVillage, which is impacted by both SpaceSpraying and SpatialRepellent

  • AD_OutsideVillage, which is only impacted by SpaceSpraying

Attraction_Config

json object

NA

NA

NA

The fraction of vector feeds attracted to the artificial diet. Specify how this effect decays over time using one of the Waning effect classes.

Disqualifying_Properties

array of strings

NA

NA

[]

A list of NodeProperty key:value pairs that cause an intervention to be aborted (persistent interventions will stop being distributed to nodes with these values). See NodeProperties and IndividualProperties parameters for more information. Generally used to control the flow of health care access. For example, to prevent the same individual from accessing health care via two different routes at the same time.
